Discover the World's Best Winter Architecture

During the dark winter days we will all be spending much more time indoors. Our editors have selected some of the best structures around the globe that celebrate colder weather.

7132 Hotel, Switzerland

In Vals, Switzerland, you will find the 7132 Hotel, a rounded white structure with huge open windows that blend right into the snow-covered surroundings. The hotel is best known for its thermal baths, which channel highly mineralised water from the St. Peter spring at a warming 30° Celsius, constructed from 60,000 slabs of quartzite by renowned international architect Peter Zumthor.

Skýli by Utopia Arkitekter, Iceland

This angular structure was designed to reflect Iceland’s rugged landscape. Strategically perched upon a mountainside, Skýli was made to act as a cabin for eager trekkers and adventurers, where they can take shelter and admire the lava fields stretching out into the distance. Inside the warped ironclad structure is a contrasting space of warm wooden flooring and soft furnishings angled towards the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The Icehotel, Swedish Lapland

This iconic hotel is in the northernmost point of Sweden, close to the Arctic Circle. Each year when temperatures rise, this beautiful ice structure melts into the ground and along with it the ice beds and sculptures that are housed within it. But fear not, just as quickly as it collapses, it is rebuilt again during the first signs of winter.

The hotel perfectly encapsulates the region’s sustainable approach to tourism: cyclical production, renewable materials and efforts to preserve local traditions. Alongside its innovative architectural elements, the hotel also offers unique excursions and workshops such as northern lights viewing experiences and husky rides led by local Sami communities.

The W Toronto is also notable for its contemporary interior designs combined with daring brutalist-inspired exterior elements, breathtaking city views and functional facilities for the cooler weather – like huge firepits, to warm its guests with after an activity-filled day in the city.

Schnee-Eule Residence by Atelier l'Abri, Canada

This all-white house designed by Atelier L’Abri is located on the outer edges of Morin-Heights village near Montreal, Quebec. Nestled amongst a pine-covered hillside, the minimalist structure has been designed to blend into the snowy surroundings with clean panelling and large, open windows.
