The brand's journey began in 1971, when Kuok opened the first Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore. The property brought a distinctly Asian approach to luxury hospitality: oriental design elements with first-class services. Since the success of this first property, Shangri-La has expanded to more than 100 hotels across 78 destinations and four brands: Shangri-La Resorts, Kerry Hotels, Traders Hotels, and JEN.
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts emerged from its origins as a small property in Singapore in the 1970s, to become one of Asia's most prestigious luxury hospitality brands. Founded by Malaysian businessman Robert Kuok, the brand was borne out of his travel experiences and desires. Kuok believed that Asian hospitality had something different to offer the historically European-dominated industry and through Shangri-La, believed transformative luxury experiences should be accessible for every traveller.
