Diary Dates: January's Art Calendar

As we usher in a new year, aesthetes are spoiled for choice with exhibitions that break boundaries, celebrate legacies and transport us to other ages and places. January’s art calendar brims with unmissable showcases across the globe, offering something to stimulate every creative palate—whether you’re drawn to the surreal, the sublime or the contemporary.

Surrealism at Centre Pompidou, Paris

Laid out like a maze with André Breton’s 1924 Surrealist manifesto at its core, this exhibition is as immersive and enigmatic as the movement it celebrates. The 14 sections around it contain everything from recognised masterpieces by such artists as Salvador Dali to quirky figures such as Japanese draughtsman Tatsuo Ikeda. On view until 13th January.

Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers at the National Gallery, London

Organised to mark the gallery's 200th anniversary, this exhibition presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the most iconic works from Van Gogh's later years in one extraordinary collection. Spanning the prolific period between 1880 and 1890, when the artist lived in Arles and Saint-Rémy, the display showcases some of his most vibrant masterpieces, including Sunflowers and Starry Night. On view until 19th January.

Louise Bourgeois: I have been to hell and back. And let me tell you, it was wonderful at Mori Art Museum, Tokyo

Bourgeois’ largest solo show in Japan contains more than 100 works, many created in the final decades of her life. Her fabric pieces in particular (including the handkerchief from which the exhibition’s title is taken) express her fluctuating world view and often black sense of humour. On view until 19th January.

Dream on - Berlin, the 90s at C/O Berlin, Berlin

Commemorating the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, this thought-provoking exhibition showcases the work of seven photographers working in East Berlin in the turbulent years post-reunification. Themes such as belonging, nightlife and inequality are explored through images that are bold, beautiful and never boring. On view until 23rd January.

Siena: The Rise of Painting 1300-1350 at the Met, New York

The most anticipated show of the season reads like a roll call of the great artists who shaped the Florentine Renaissance. Although none of them survived the bubonic plague, figures such as Duccio, Simone Martini and Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti live on through their sublime paintings. On view until 26th January.
