The Best Places for a Weekend City Break in Europe

The Best Places for a Weekend City Break in Europe

Europe’s cities offer an ideal mix for a weekend getaway, with each destination brimming with its own unique character and must-see sights. This month, dive into the best Europe has to offer and discover where to go for a quick escape that promises history, culture, and charm.

Copenhagen

This charming city is steeped in history and culture, from art galleries and concept stores to top-of-the-range restaurants serving fresh fish and colourful smörgåsbord. Around Kødbyen, the city’s old meatpacking district, you'll find several independent breweries and quirky cafés (coffee and vinyl, anyone?), while ancient sites such as The Roundtower, Rosenberg Castle, and Amalaienborg Palace stand as a reminder of the city's regal past.

Barcelona

Barcelona’s winding streets and bustling tapas bars were described in vivid detail in Carlos Ruiz Zafón's global best-seller, 'The Shadow of the Wind' – and the essence of the book is still captured in the city today. We recommend exploring the medieval gothic quarter before strolling down La Rambla towards the harbour and Barceloneta Beach; or visit one of Antoni Gaudi's great architectural works – Parc Güell, one of his three Casas, or his magnum opus: Sagrada Familia. It is recommended that you book a ticket in advance for these sites as they're visitor hotspots.

Lyon

This trendy city in southeastern France has not just one but two rivers running through it, since the sprawling metropolis is situated at the junction of the Rhône and Saône. Stroll through the old town, where you can admire the medieval architecture and numerous restaurants serving traditional Lyonnaise dishes, before embarking on a hilly climb up to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. The city is also famed for its art scene, with graphic design studios and vintage shops bursting onto the pavements from Renaissance-esque buildings.

Rome

It’s apparent in the city's eclectic mix of architecture that Rome certainly wasn’t “built in a day”. Once the capital of the Roman empire, remains of the Italian capital’s illustrious past are scattered across the city. Book tickets in advance to visit the Roman Forum and Colloseum, before heading to the Spanish Steps or Trevi Fountain for a scenic photo opportunity. You'll also find that Rome is famed for its culinary scene. Enjoy plates of Cacio e Pepe and Pasta alla Gricia before embarking on your next Roman experience.
