The foundation of the Ascot Racecourse has royal beginnings that span three centuries. When Queen Anne rode out across the bucolic expanses of Berkshire in 1711, she found the perfect place for her ‘horses to gallop at full stretch’. Since then, blue-blooded members of British society are welcomed along with more than 250,000 spectators who don their finest outfits to cheer on the horses and enjoy a glass of Pimm’s. Renowned for being a technical course, particularly over the fences, there is a tough 73-foot climb from the lowest point to the Winning Post which creates many opportunities for unexpected victories. 

Dating back to 1823, the Ladies’ Day tradition stemmed from a time when women were given free or discounted tickets to Ascot, which were otherwise exclusively for men. Thankfully, gendered ticket pricing has long been discontinued and today it has become synonymous with sartorial pageantry. From outlandish chiffon fascinators to resplendent race-day regalia, expect to witness an expressive display of flamboyant fashion. Be sure to check the dress code before you arrive as it varies depending on your ticket.
