April’s Art: Spring Renewals

April’s Art: Spring Renewals

As April approaches, bringing budding flowers and warmer spells, it also ushers in a dazzling array of cultural highlights. From long-awaited reopenings to glittering exhibitions, here’s your guide to some of the month’s upcoming events.

The Frick Collection

1 East 70th Street, New York, NY 10021

After a multi-year renovation of this historic Fifth Avenue mansion, The Frick Collection reopens on April 17th. Visitors are invited to rediscover one of New York’s most exquisite art collections. Featuring portraits by Titian and Gainsborough, transportive landscapes by Guardi and Turner, plus Monet’s, Manet’s and many more, the collection is a true feast for the eyes. Rarely exhibited and newly acquired works will also be on show in a fresh suite of galleries on the mansion’s second floor, open to the public for the first time.

Cartier at the V&A

Victoria & Albert Museum, Cromwell Road, London, SW7 2RL

All that glitters isn’t gold; in London’s historic V&A it’ll be diamonds. Set to dazzle this spring is ‘Cartier at the V&A’, the first major exhibition dedicated to the French jeweller in 30 years. With more than 350 pieces on display, the exhibition traces Cartier’s legacy through iconic gemstones to intricate watches. Highlights include the Manchester Tiara and Princess Margaret’s rose-clip brooch, worn at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. While you’re at the V&A, make a day of it – the museum’s Rodin rooms are free to visit, and for an extra dose of opulence, ‘The Great Mughals: Art, Architecture and Opulence’ runs until May 5th.

Ruth Asawa: A Retrospective

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 151 Third Street, SF, CA 94103

SFMOMA pays tribute to one of modernism’s most innovative artists with a major exhibition scheduled to celebrate the late Ruth Asawa’s centenary. Best known for her ethereal looped-wire sculptures, Asawa’s legacy extends far beyond, and the exhibition draws upon the full six decades of her creative canon. The artwork will be accompanied by a rich array of archival material that illuminates her public and private life as well as several works by peers and mentors, including Josef Albers and Imogen Cunningham.

Art Paris

Grand Palais, 7 Avenue Winston Churchill, Paris, 75008

Paris’ leading modern and contemporary art fair returns to the newly refurbished Grand Palais, welcoming 170 exhibitors from 25 countries for an exciting showcase of artistic talent. From April 3-6, this year’s fair embraces the themes of ‘Immortelle’, celebrating the eternalism of art and ‘Hors Limites’ (Out of Bounds), which spotlights the intersection of art and performance. Beyond the gallery booths, the fair’s dynamic programme includes panel discussions, awards and an exclusive VIP programme.
