An Art Guide of Chicago for World EXPO

An Art Guide of Chicago for World EXPO

From collagraph prints of contemporary clothing to traditional Afro-Caribbean techniques of weaving, ASMALLWORLD art enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to at EXPO Chicago, the renowned modern art fair running from April 24 - 27. More than 170 galleries from 93 cities are participating in this year’s event, with exhibited works split into five categories: Galleries, Exposure, Profile, Editions + Books and Special Exhibitions. As the fair returns to Navy Pier’s Festival Hall for its 12th edition, our editors have selected the best exhibitions to catch whilst in the Windy City.

Galleries

Featuring leading international exhibitors, the ‘Galleries’ category of EXPO Chicago is a top-quality platform for arts and culture, showcasing work from many celebrated institutions. Highlights include the Opera Gallery and David Nolan Gallery. Be sure to look out for ‘CONTRAST’, an entirely new and dynamic section in the ‘Galleries’ category, curated by Lauren Haynes, Head Curator at Governors Island Arts.

Exposure

Located on the main floor of the hall, the ‘Exposure’ section is reserved for single and two-artists' works, represented by galleries younger than ten years. There is so much emerging talent in this section that it is impossible to mine all its gold but be sure to prioritise Dana Sherwood’s riotous mythological paintings and Ali Zakeri’s moody and visceral boxing snapshots.

Profile

Featuring work by single artists or a collective, the ‘Profile’ section champions installations and exhibitions that are particularly focused or niche. Volume Gallery will be representing SHENEQUA at the fair, a multi-disciplinary artist who draws on her Ghanaian heritage to create stunning woven installations using traditional textile techniques.

Special Exhibitions

Honouring its social responsibility to promote art by nonprofit institutions and museums, the ‘Special Exhibitions’ section at EXPO Chicago features projects by selected regional, national and international NPOs. Look out for work by Centre for Native Futures, a platform that champions native and indigenous artists.

With a hive of creative activity happening in the city, the Peninsula Chicago Hotel offers a welcome respite following a day of arts and culture. The hotel is an official partner of the EXPO Chicago, and this Art Deco haven will be sure to have the answer to any questions or needs during the fair.
