These airlines will extend frequent flyer statuses

Worldwide travel is practically at a standstill due to the corona pandemic. Even veteran frequent flyers generally have to stay on the ground at the moment. Nevertheless, if you don’t fly, you can’t earn any miles, so the desired frequent flyer status in 2020 is a long way off. Fortunately, many airlines do not abandon their most loyal customers in this situation. Here is an overview of the goodwill regulations published to date for some of the most important frequent flyer programmes.

Air Canada Altitude

Mileage expiration for Miles in Air Canada´s Altitude frequent flier program is suspended until 14 May. Additional upgrade certificates valid until the end of May 2021 should be available in your account as a special gesture immediately. Further measures for status holders will follow at a later time.

Air France/KLM Flying Blue

The expiry of miles will also be suspended for Flying Blue members, but here even until the end of the year. In addition, the qualification hurdle for all members whose (re-)qualification period ends in March, April or May 2020 will be reduced to 75% of the regular value. With this discount eligible Gold members can renew their Gold status for 135 XP instead of the regular 180 XP.

Emirates Skywards

For all trips until the end of June, there is a 20% tier miles bonus. The status hurdle for your current (re)qualification year is reduced to 80% of the regular value.

Etihad Guest

For every flight from March to June, you will be credited with double status miles. Depending on your status level, you will receive a certain number of status miles automatically credited in March, April and May (Silver 1.500 tier miles, Gold 3.000 tier miles, Platinum 8.000 tier miles).

Qatar Airways Privilege Club

Extension of the status validity and the (re-)qualification period by up to 6 months for all those whose status would expire by the end of January 2021. Furthermore, there are some personalised offers. Registration was required by 24 March via a link in the e-mail or Privilege Club account sent to you by Qatar Airways. If you missed the registration deadline, you should check your Privilege Club account anyway. Maybe you get lucky and the registration is still possible.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Automatic extension of the status validity and the (re-)qualification period by 12 months for all KrisFlyer members.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Automatic extension of the status validity and the (re-)qualification period by 6 months for all Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members.

Lufthansa Miles & More

So far Lufthansa Miles & More has not published a goodwill policy but has indicated that it will follow at a later point. What exactly Lufthansa Miles & More will offer, is unclear. We don't expect it to be a free status extension though. Instead Miles & More will probably lower their status criteria substantially this year.

Finnair Plus

Finnair Plus is extending the status validity and (re-)qualification period by 6 months for all status holders.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

Qantas is extending the status validity of all members whose status would have regularly expired between March 2020 and February 2021 by 12 months.

Air New Zealand Airpoints

Air New Zealand Airpoints is extending the status validity of all members whose status would have regularly expired in 2020 by 12 months. This is also applicable to members who have already requalified their status this year.
