A Packing Guide for Skiing in the Alps

A Packing Guide for Skiing in the Alps

There’s nothing like poor packing to ruin a holiday, especially when it comes to an action-packed ski trip. To ensure your next Alpine escape is nothing short of serene, here’s our guide to balancing practicality with a touch of luxury when you fill your bags.

The Essentials

When it comes to skiing, it’s all about layers. Thermal leggings and tops as a base are a must and, over these, you want a quality ski jacket that’s lightweight and hooded, allowing for weather protection and mobility. Hats, thick gloves and a snug knitted jumper will keep the chill at bay, even on the iciest mornings. And let’s not forget socks. Think you’ve packed enough? Add two more. You’ll need at least one fresh pair per day and having extras means you can liberally treat yourself. Wool is the go-to for practicality, but consider packing a pair of cashmere socks for those cosy evenings back in the chalet.

Sun Protection

In the lead-up to an Alpine holiday, many can be sidetracked by the prospect of snow-capped peaks and forget about sun protection. Above the clouds, you’ll likely enjoy sky-blue days with beaming sunshine when the UV exposure is intense. Protect your skin and eyes while you’re out adventuring; pack lip balm with SPF and sunscreen. And when you’re relaxing on a terrace with a mug of hot chocolate and whisky, or enjoying a lively après-ski, there's nothing you'll appreciate more than a good pair of sunglasses.

STAY WARM – BUT DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE STRONG SUN RAYS

Comfort and Luxuries

A little comfort goes a long way. There’s nothing worse than having your pockets full while skiing and risking a beloved possession flying out mid-slope. Bring a small, practical backpack and effortlessly carry essentials such as gloves, ski passes, your phone and water as well as some snacks and a camera.

After a day spent on the slopes, feet shackled in ski boots, slipping into a pair of slippers is a luxury you won’t regret. Plus, many Alpine hotels feature gorgeous spas, pools, saunas and steam rooms, such as at the Gstaad Palace and The Chedi Andermatt. Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit and robe so you can enjoy these world-class facilities; the perfect way to unwind after a day of physical exertion.

You can book to stay at both these hotels, as well as other elegant Alpine retreats with world-class spas, through ASMALLWORLD Collection, where you will be entitled to VIP benefits such as room upgrades, hotel credit and more at no extra cost.
