A Guide to Scenic Scottish Adventures

A Guide to Scenic Scottish Adventures

Rich in history, wrapped in wild landscapes, and steeped in legend — Scotland continues to captivate travellers with its timeless beauty. We’ve selected three regions that offer a perfect mix of cultural depth and luxurious stays, from heritage-filled Borders towns to Highland grandeur.

Scottish Borders

The Scottish Borders, a county near Edinburgh, is filled with rolling landscapes and coastal gems. Meander through the Cheviot Hills which straddle the border between Scotland and England, where you might just encounter an alpaca – not quite a unicorn, but every bit as charming – or explore the atmospheric ruins of Melrose Abbey and Jedburgh Abbey, standing since the 12th century. Take in sweeping views atop Eildon or, for those drawn to the sea, the Borders’ coastline is home to stunning beaches. Surfers flock to the waves of Pease Bay while the dramatic cliffs of St Abbs Head and its charming neighbouring town are the dictionary definition of a seaside haven.

With so much to explore, ensure you’re in total comfort at SCHLOSS Roxburghe, a historic estate with an award-winning spa. We recommend participating in activities such as clay-pigeon shooting, archery, and fly fishing – or simply enjoy a leisurely game of croquet on pristine lawns.

Gullane, East Lothian

Easily reachable from Edinburgh, East Lothian’s Gullane is a veritable golfers’ paradise, boasting no fewer than 22 golf courses within a 10-mile radius. Overlooking the prestigious Muirfield Championship course, Greywalls Hotel is an Edwardian country house exuding refined charm and thoughtful design and detail. There are just 23 rooms in total, which lends an intimate feel to the gorgeous space. Beyond the fairways, explore the golden sands of Gullane and scenic Yellowcraig, both offering refreshing sea air and spectacular views – if it weren't for the temperature, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in the Caribbean.

SCOTLAND, A VERITABLE GOLFERS' PARADISE

Scottish Highlands, Braemar

For those seeking a Highland escape, The Fife Arms, an eclectically adorned boutique hotel owned by the art gallery Hauser and Wirth, is a destination in and of itself. Adventure seekers can explore the great outdoors with ghillie-guided hikes, foraging experiences and pony picnics. For a glimpse into Scotland’s past, Balmoral Castle and Braemar Castle are both a short drive away and if you time your visit right, finding yourself in Braemar on the first Saturday of September, you’ll witness something spectacularly Scottish: the annual Braemar Gathering. One of the greatest Highland games that has taken place annually since 1832, highlights include the hammer toss, tug-o-war, Highland dancing, as well as extensive festivities.
