A Coffee Tour of Auckland

A Coffee Tour of Auckland

Auckland, New Zealand’s most densely populated city, is the beating heart of the North Island and home to some of the finest coffee shops and cafés. From humble coffee carts nestled in city parks, to impressive industrial roasting spaces, our editors bring to you the most exclusive spots, recommended by a Kiwi local, to score the perfect cup of joe.

Ozone, Grey Lynn

The coffee world can feel intimidating but Ozone, a speciality coffee company founded 26 years ago, provides delicious brews for all. From single origins to bespoke blends, Ozone is an unwavering favourite amongst the coffee enthusiasts of Auckland. Award-winning and proudly B-Corp Certified, the café is committed to reducing waste, paying fair wages and meeting international environmental standards.

AllPress, Freeman’s Bay

From modest beginnings as a small stand in Victoria Park, this roastery is now raising the rafters of the Auckland coffee scene. With beams of natural light and lofty timber ceilings, this caffeine hub is the original branch of the now international roasting company. Its house blend, which comes straight from the source, fuels the hungry coffee machines as early as 7.00am during the week. With complimentary beans and signature blends available to try, this spot is the perfect fusion of community and flavour. Plus, they fund an impressive creative project, AllPress Studio, which is a space for emerging talent to showcase their work.

Kōkako, Auckland Central

Auckland’s first organic coffee roasters, Kōkako is both a café and a sustainability project, committed to doing right by Mother Earth and its people. The roastery team is given free range to create new flavour profiles, and aromatic espressos experienced inside the mahogany and Yves Klein Blue interiors have become well-known across the city. Kōkako publishes an annual sustainability report which details its support for coffee farms in the Sidama region of Ethiopia, where workers are prioritised and coffee trees are pesticide free. Kōkako’s packaging is also made of compostable wood pulp and they are Fairtrade-certified as well as carbon neutral so you can enjoy your coffee in the knowledge that it's not just fairly paying the farmers, but it's great for the planet too.

AUCKLAND OFFERS THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT FOR A SCENIC COFFEE

As ASMALLWORLD member, we recommend unwinding at Park Hyatt Hotel located on the waterfront in the Wynyard Quarter or heading to its restaurant Onemata if you're still buzzing from one too many caffeine encounters. SO/ Auckland is also an arty urban hideaway in downtown, featuring maximalist rooms, standalone bathtubs and an experimental French patisserie.
