How much you’ll enjoy staying at The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong is almost entirely dependent on how much you appreciate the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower. If you're not a fan, it's best you steer clear. But if you love those gleaming purple spheres, then this is the place to stay as the tower dominates the amazing views in this hotel.

Despite being situated within the top floors of the southern tower of glittering Pudong's Shanghai International Finance Centre (which is itself home to many excellent restaurants and luxury boutiques), the hotel’s interiors owe far more to the style of the city's glamorous 1930s. If you're a fan of Art-Deco architecture, this is the place to stay in Shanghai, as every inch is done up in this elegantly decadent style: the lobby, the sumptuous rooms and suites, the restaurants and bars – the lot.

The hotel never misses an occasion to show off its incredible views of the Pearl Tower, the Huangpu River and the Bund. With a 270-degree view across the whole hotel, every room has huge windows (most of the suites have panoramic ones) with the rooms structured with the skyline as the focus. Again, don't stay here if you don't appreciate the Pearl Tower.

The views can be further enjoyed in the award-winning spa while sampling a delectably diverse array of treatments, whether it's traditional, chi-restoring massages or decadent body washes in powdered pearls. An indoor pool and fitness centre round out the amenities.

With incredible views at all of its dining options, the food available would have to be excellent to keep diners from being distracted. Thankfully, the hotel delivers in that regard. Whether it's Italian classics at the elegant Scena or Michelin-starred Cantonese cuisine at Jin Xuan, both are excellent. For drinks, the jazz bar Aura Lounge is an appreciative nod to the 1930s stylings of the hotel, but it’s sadly overshadowed by the awe-inspiring Flair. China's highest rooftop bar, Flair is an attraction in itself, with exquisite cocktails in one of the most exclusive and incredible settings in the city.

Despite these old-school stylings and excellent drinking spots, the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong supremely caters to children and families with the Ritz Kids Club, a highlight being the Night Safari indoor camping experience for ages 4 to 8 (which also comes with lots of free goodies).
