Explora Atacama Hotel
About the hotel
"A tranquil desert escape that feels a world away from the hustle and bustle, Explora Atacama boasts peaceful guest rooms, health-centric dining and a truly unforgettable location."
The architecture of the property is attractive as can be; the low buildings blend contemporary minimalism with the style of traditional indigenous adobe homes for an aesthetic that feels distinctly at one with the surrounding landscape. This past and present design is very much intentional and pays homage to the original inhabitants of the region. Within, the spaces are calm and welcoming, designed to maximise peace and privacy as well as the views of the world beyond. Rooms are divided into three categories: the Tulur Rooms (which are optimal for families thanks to their interconnected design), the Yali Rooms (which overlook the desert landscape) and the Catur Suites, which are the largest and most indulgent accommodations of all. Whichever you choose, you can expect plenty of peace and quiet, a simple interior design scheme that utilises plenty of natural materials like wood and wicker and large windows that frame beautiful views. If you manage to snag one of the four Catur Suites, you’ll be treated to elevated design schemes and perks like private balconies with views of the countryside.
The gastronomy scene at Explora is health-conscious, designed to nourish and invigorate while still being positively delicious. Pure flavours highlight the best of regional cuisine, and dishes are always accompanied by Chilean wines, which (needless to say) are superb.
After a late dinner, head to The Observatory. Inaugurated in 2008, it is recognised as one of the best private observatories in Chile. You could hardly ask for a better location, given that San Pedro de Atacama boasts some of the clearest night skies in the world. During the daytime hours, you’ll have all manner of adventures to choose from, from hiking expeditions to van excursions and cycling trips (which range from easy to expert difficulty levels) through the unforgettable landscape. The most adventurous of guests can partake in high mountain ascents and multi-night expeditions in the Atacama. After a day filled with excitement, visit the pampas grass-surrounded spa for some much-needed pampering and a dip in one of the outdoor hot tubs.
